When it comes to concrete coatings, proper preparation and maintenance are key to ensuring a long-lasting and beautiful finish. Whether you're getting your pool deck ready for a fresh coat, a first time coating or looking to keep your newly coated surface in top condition, these pro-tips will guide you through the process.

How to Prepare Your Pool Deck for Concrete Coatings

1. Lower the Water Line:

Before starting any coating project, it's essential to lower the water line of your pool to below the tile line, under the coping. This step ensures that the coating process does not interfere with the pool's water and allows for a more even and secure application around the edges. Keeping the water line low also prevents any accidental splashes from affecting the fresh coating, once our plastic protective covering is removed from the surface of the water.

2. Remove Furniture:

Clear the workspace for the coating crew by removing any furniture from the floor surface. This includes chairs, tables, loungers, grills and any other items that could obstruct the coating process. An unobstructed surface allows for a smoother and more efficient application, ensuring that every inch of your pool deck receives a uniform coat. If you need help, please be sure to ask one of our service members prior to the installation date! We are happy to help.

3. Clear Debris and Secure the Area:

Remove any leaves, excess dirt and debris from the pool deck. Keeping the workspace clear of heavy debris is crucial for successful substrate preparation and for a professional finish. Additionally, it is important to secure the area to prevent pets and small children from entering the workspace. This not only ensures safety but also prevents any accidental damage to the coating during the application process, or cure time.

4. Be Prepared for Weather Interruptions:

Late summer afternoons often bring unexpected rain, which can disrupt your coating project on occasion. Plan to install coatings during the morning dry hours and early afternoon when weather conditions are more stable. If rain is anticipated to continue for extended periods, to include both mornings and afternoons, be prepared for a slight delay. This precaution ensures that the coating has ample time to cure properly without being compromised by moisture.

How to Maintain Your Newly Coated Pool Deck

After your pool deck has been professionally coated, maintaining its pristine condition is essential to ensure longevity and visual appeal.

1. Restrict Access Post-Coating:

After the coating is applied, keep pets and people off the surface for at least 24 hours. For heavier items like grills, hot tubs, or large couches, wait 48 hours before returning them to the deck. This waiting period ensures that the coating cures properly and is not subjected to premature wear or damage. Rain rarely affects coatings; however, special cases might require touch-ups. Please do not hesitate to inspect the finished product and to inform the installer of any damages from early rainfall.

2. Keep It Clean:

Regularly clean your coated surface to maintain its appearance. Avoid using a pressure washer with a PSI over 2000, as high pressure can damage the coating. Instead, use a bristle brush with water to remove heavy debris or buildup. While soap isn't required, Simple Green products can be an excellent choice for tougher stains and general cleaning.

3. Reseal Pavers & Recoat Concrete Accordingly

To keep your pavers and or concrete looking fresh, reseal pavers every two to three years and concrete surfaces according to your warranty and installer instructions. Resealing and re-coating provides additional protective layers, enhancing durability; in addition, it maintains the coating's aesthetic appeal. Regular resealing and proactive maintenance is a simple yet effective way to prolong the life of your pool deck's coating.
